Switzerland's French-Speaking Riviera
Lake Geneva, or Lac Léman as locals know it, is Western Europe's largest alpine lake, cradled between the French Chablais and the Swiss Vaud and Valais. The northern shore is unmistakably Swiss but speaks French, drinks Chasselas and lives at a different tempo from Zurich or Bern. Five days is the perfect length: enough to slow down between Lausanne, the Lavaux vineyards, Vevey, Montreux and the medieval moat at Chillon Castle.
Day 1 — Lausanne and the Olympic Quarter
Begin in Lausanne, the lakeside capital of Vaud and home of the IOC. The Olympic Museum on the Ouchy waterfront is unexpectedly excellent — interactive, well-paced, and ideal for travellers of any age. Save the afternoon for the medieval old town and Cathédrale Notre-Dame, where a night watchman still calls the hour from the bell tower.
Day 2 — Lavaux Vineyards by Foot
Catch the train two stops east to Lutry and walk the UNESCO-listed Lavaux terraces toward St-Saphorin (about 11 km, 3 hours). The path threads through ancient stone walls planted with Chasselas grapes, with the lake glinting below and the French Alps rising on the far shore. Stop at a winegrower's cellar in Epesses or Rivaz for a tasting flight (CHF 15–25).

Day 3 — Vevey and the Riviera
Vevey is the chocolate capital of Switzerland (Nestlé HQ is here) and the home of Charlie Chaplin's late years. Visit the Chaplin's World museum at Manoir de Ban, then linger at the lakeside, where Oskar Kokoschka and Henryk Sienkiewicz once worked. Cap the day with raclette and a glass of Yvorne white wine.
Day 4 — Montreux & Chillon
Take the slow lakeside train or, even better, a CGN paddle steamer from Vevey to Montreux. Walk the floral promenade — bronze of Freddie Mercury included — out to the Château de Chillon, the Bonivard prison Lord Byron made famous. Spend an hour inside the keep, then return to Montreux for dinner. The Montreux Jazz Festival runs in early July.
- Lausanne Cathedral and the Sauvabelin Tower at sunset
- The Lavaux Express tourist train if walking isn't an option
- Chillon Castle audio guide — better than the printed one
- A boat ride to Yvoire (France) for a half-day cross-border lunch
- Montreux Christmas Market, late November to December
Day 5 — Glacier 3000 Day Trip
Drive or train-and-bus from Montreux up to Les Diablerets and ride the cable car to Glacier 3000. The Peak Walk is the only suspension bridge in the world linking two mountain summits — and on a clear day, you can spot the Matterhorn, Mont Blanc and the Eiger from a single platform.
Where to Stay
Splurge at the Beau-Rivage Palace in Lausanne or the Fairmont Le Montreux Palace. On a moderate budget, Hôtel Angleterre & Résidence in Lausanne and the Tralala Hotel Montreux are charming and walkable to the lake.
